Growth of carbon capture and storage will bring jobs to the Coastal Bend | Opinion
In the next decade, forecasts suggest that demand for electricity in Texas will nearly double. It might seem that this rapid spike in energy demand would conflict with the need for greater sustainability and lower emissions, but carbon capture and storage (CCS) is quickly becoming a solution that can benefit the Coastal Bend and other communities like it around the state. Texas’ public and private sectors must work collaboratively to evolve its energy and manufacturing industries to meet the needs of the future.
Carbon capture and storage is a proven technology that has been utilized in Texas and across the globe for more than 50 years. Carbon dioxide, which would otherwise be released into the air, is separated and captured from within industrial sources like refining and power generation and safely transported to a site where it is permanently stored deep underground, usually a mile or more below the surface.
